Após os premiados sucessos de público e crítica My Fair Lady e West Side Story , Jorge Takla prepara em São Paulo a sua mais grandiosa montagem de um musical originário da Broadway: O Rei e Eu, de Richard Rodgers e Oscar Hammerstein II, criadores de sucessos como South Pacific, A Noviça Rebelde,Carousel e Oklahoma!

O Rei e Eu conta a história do poderoso e carismático Rei do Sião, atual Tailândia, que tinha dezenas de esposas e mais de setenta filhos, e de Anna, professora inglesa contratada para ensinar inglês e um pouco da cultura ocidental aos príncipes e princesas. Charmosa e voluntariosa, Anna passa por sérias dificuldades com as diferenças entre a cultura inglesa e a oriental, mas mesmo assim impõe suas idéias e suas posições, e aprende a compreender e aceitar as cultura e as tradições siamesas, tornando-se parte desta imensa família real, com muito humor, amor, diálogos maravilhosos e um lindo clima de romance no ar, embalado por músicas deslumbrantes.

Baseado no romance original Anna e o Rei do Sião de Margareth Landon, que inspirou dois filmes, Anna e o Rei do Sião (1946, com Rex Harrisson e Irene Dunne) e Anna e o Rei (1999, com Jodie Foster), além da versão cinematografica do musical, que imortalizou Yul Brynner e foi vencedora de vários Oscars, O Rei e Eu é um espetáculo para toda a família que conta com um elenco de mais de 60 atores, incluindo 15 crianças, 500 figurinos orientais e ocidentais e 10 cenários grandiosos.

Nos principais papeis de O REI E EU estão Tuca Andrada (KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN) e Claudia Netto (COMPANY e AVENUE Q)

A montagem brasileira de O Rei e Eu é encenada a partir do original de Rodgers e Hammerstein, que estreou na Broadway em 1951, com Yul Brynner e Gertrude Lawrence.

Estreia prevista para a segunda quinzena de fevereiro no TEATRO ALFA- São Paulo

Paulo Afonso de Lima lives in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,where he has been

for more than thirty years a recognized Theatre Director and Drama

Teacher. Mr. Lima has directed more than seventy plays and musicals in

his Country, including HAMLET, FAUSTO by Goethe, THE DRESSER by Ronald

Harwood, HUGHIE by O'Neill, SONDHEIM TONIGHT (the first time the work

of Stephen Sondhein was presented to a Brazilian audience),FRED AND

JUDY-THE SONGS OF GARLAND AND ASTAIRE, GARDEL-O MUSICAL, WHITE NIGHTS

- a theatrical adaptation of Dostoievsky work, AMERIKA ( a musical

piece on Kafka famous book with music of George Gershwin and Scott

Joplin), LES MISERABLES ( not the musical but the staight adaptation

of Victor Hugo work by French playwright Guy LaForret, with more than

seventy actors. This production was also staged by Mr. Lima in

Portugal with a Portuguese cast), A FALECIDA by Nelson Rodrigues (the

most important Brazilian playwright), OEDIPUS by Sophocles, as well as

university productions of CABARET, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, STEEL PIER,

DANCING IN THE DARK ( a musical approach for the stage of Lars Von

Thiers motion picture - music by BjÃ¶rk),THE BLUE ANGEL by Pam Gems and

recently, SWEENEY TODD (among many others), all of them at CAL, the

most famous drama school in Brazil. Mr Lima is recipient of many

Brazilian theatre awards in his career and in 1983 was invited by the

U.S. Government to visit during one year many American theatre

centers. About the staging of THE DRESSER, Mr Harwood (in Rio de

Janeiro for the opening night) declared to Brazilian newspapers : "Mr.

Lima approach to my play has a theatricality that, in more than fifty

productions worldwide, I have never expected to find. Bravo!". Paulo

Afonso de Lima is a contant researcher of the evolution of the Musical

Theatre in America, in his Country and in the whole world. His book A

BROADWAY Ã‰ AQUI (Broadway is Here) about the amazing increase of the

American Musical Theatre among Brazilian audience, will reach

Brazilian bookstores later this year.
